Британський прем’єр Кейр Стармер зняв портрети Єлизавети I і Волтера Релі, які були виставлені на Даунінг-стріт. Повідомляє Telegraph.

Хоча Даунінг стріт не пояснив рішення видалити картини, але Єлизавету I, і Релі критикували за їхні зв’язки з работоргівлею.

Єлизавета I була першою прихильницею участі Англії в работоргівлі. Релі був колонізатором, який намагався створити британське поселення в Північній Кароліні, але врешті зазнав невдачі через погані стосунки з корінними американцями.

Картини були замінені з обох боків каміна на Даунінг-стріт двома роботами покійної художниці португальського походження Дами Паули Рего – Етюд для саду Крівеллі та Етюд для саду Крівеллі (Відвідання).

«Сад Крівеллі» — одна з найвідоміших робіт Рего. Торік Національна галерея заявила, що в центрі уваги — «сильні та сміливі жінки».
