Netflix остаточно ліквідує сервіс прокату DVD-дисків поштою — саме з цього компанія починала свою діяльність 25 років тому.

Найближчим часом клієнти Netflix, які досі підписані на розсилку DVD (а їх залишилося менше за мільйон), отримають поштою свої диски. Компанія дозволила людям не повертати їх.

 

«Це дуже гірко. Ми знали, що цей день настане, але дивовижне те, що він не настав 15 років тому», — сказав Associated Press співзасновник Netflix Марк Рендольф. Він був виконавчим директором компанії, коли компанія надіслала свій перший DVD.

У 1997 році Рендольф разом із Рідом Гастінгсом придумав послугу розсилки DVD-поштою – таким чином Netflix кинув виклик тодішньому лідеру ринку прокату Blockbuster. У березні 1998 Netflix надіслав клієнтам свій перший диск. Це був фільм Beetlejuice Тіма Бертона. Відтоді компанія відправила 5,2 мільярда DVD.

У 2011 році Netflix вирішив відокремити бізнес DVD від стримінгового сервісу. Це сталося через рік після того, як Blockbuster повідомив про своє банкрутство.
