За традицією, поява нового імператора символізує початок нової ери. Кожна епоха має свою назву, що збігається з девізом, під яким править імператор.

В даному випадку це була ера Хейсей, що означає "Спокійне розвиток". Ця назва стане посмертним ім'ям Акіхіто. Назва ери імператора Нарухіто, яка розпочнеться 9 серпня, ще невідома. Нагадаємо, раніше Акіхіто анонсував свій виступ перед аудиторією.
