 Кількість письменників, ув'язнених у Китаї, становить 107 осіб. Майже половина з них заарештована за висловлювання в Інтернеті. Про це пише Guardian з посиланням на звіт Freedom to Write index 2023, опублікований американським Pen.
 
На Китай припадає майже одна третина ув’язнених письменників світу. Загалом у світі їх 339
 
Людей, затриманих владою за їх онлайн-висловлювання, як правило, заарештовують за підозрою у «підбурюванні сварок і провокуванні неприємностей» – звинувачення, яке є розпливчастим і може бути застосовуватися поліцією довільно.
Такий термін зʼявився у 2013 для тих, хто, як вважає китайська влада, дезінформує населення.
