Раніше The New York Times повідомила про існування записів телефонних розмов, які підтверджують наявність контактів членів президентської кампанії Трампа з представниками російської розвідки за рік до президентських виборів у США в листопаді 2016 року.

За інформацією джерел, один з фігурантів цих телефонних розмов - член передвиборчого штабу Трампа Пол Манафорт, який співпрацював з Опозиційним блоком і організував таємну операцію з лобіювання у Вашингтоні Партії регіонів під час правління Віктора Януковича.

Нинішній скандал назрів після того, як соратник Трампа Майкл Флінн подав у відставку з посади посади помічника президента США з національної безпеки.
