З архівів випливає, що гундяєв був агентом КДБ. У 1971 році 24-річному священику дозволили переїхати до Женеви, він мав збирати інформацію про членів Всесвітньої ради церков і впливати на їхнє ставлення до Радянського Союзу. Потім він повернувся до СРСР і почав швидко просуватися в церковній ієрархії.
