Apple дозволить користувачам у Європейському Союзі завантажувати застосунки зі сторонніх магазинів, а не лише з AppStore. Таке рішення ухвалили через закон ЄС про цифрові ринки — зміни набудуть чинності в березні з виходом iOS 17.4 та зруйнують багаторічну монополію App Store на ринку поширення програм для iPhone.

Закон регулюватиме діяльність найбільших компаній, які забезпечують доступ до пошукових систем і магазинів застосунків, щоб зробити ринок більш чесним для великих компаній та менших фірм. Apple вже неодноразово звинувачували в монополії
Apple вилучила популярну гру Fortnite з App Store. Між компаніями почалася війна, адже користувачі можуть завантажувати застосунки лише з фірмового магазину App Store.
Щойно Apple схвалить маркетплейс, його можна буде встановити на смартфон. Після цього користувач зможе завантажувати будь-які застосунки, зокрема й ті, що порушують правила App Store. Розробники програм зможуть інтегрувати альтернативні платіжні системи для внутрішніх покупок. Якщо вони оберуть Apple, то їм треба буде сплачувати комісію в розмірі 3% за оброблення платежів.
У Apple таке рішення критикують — за версією компанії, це може загрожувати конфіденційності користувачів і підвищить ризик завантаження шкідливого програмного забезпечення і шахрайства.
Також компанія розширить можливості вибору браузера, тому користувачі зможуть відмовитися від фірмового браузера Safari й обрати інший.
