Примірник “Поезії Байрона” зі шкільної бібліотеки в Англії повернувся на свою поличку через 113 років. У такого столітнього запізнення є вельми поважна причина. Але про неї можна було і не дізнатись, якби не один відповідальний чоловік.

Книгу, позичену в шкільній бібліотеці ще перед Першою світовою війною, нарешті повернули – із запізненням на понад століття.

За даними видання, примірник “Поезії Байрона” знайшов чоловік у графстві Кармартеншир (південний Вельс). Він прийняв рішення повернути книгу до школи Сент-Біз, поблизу Вайтхейвена, Камбрія, де її взяв почитати школяр. ВУсередині книги в синій тканинній палітурці написано ім’я позичальника (Леонард Юбенк) і дату, коли йому дали книгу.

25 вересня 1911 року молодий англієць Леонард Юбенк взяв у шкільній бібліотеці збірку творів поета Джорджа Байрона. Незабаром Юбенк закінчив школу і з якихось причин не повернув книгу до книгозбірні. Потім він продовжив навчання в Королівському коледжі Оксфорда. Записи свідчать, що, попри поганий зір, у 1915 році Леонарда завербували до 15-го прикордонного полку для участі в Першій світовій війні. 23 лютого 1916 року Юбенк загинув у бою від пострілу в голову під Іпром (Бельгія). Молоду людину поховали там на місцевому цвинтарі.

Школа Сент-Біс у Камбрії, яка пропонує денне навчання та пансіон, працює досі. “Неймовірно, що частина нашої історії повернулася до рідних стін після всіх цих довгих років”, – зазначив у розмові з журналістами директор освітньої установи Ендрю Кіп.

Леонард Юбенк згадується на шкільній дошці пошани як “англієць, хоробрий, чесний і відданий”.

Книга поета-романтика Байрона – не перша, яку повернули до бібліотеки після тривалого користування. У травні книгу, взяту в бібліотеці в Гельсінкі, повернули із запізненням на 84 роки. Йдеться про фінський переклад історичного роману Артура Конан Дойля “Біженці”.
