Згідно з даними компанії, автомобілі постачалися на російський ринок із заводу в Ганновері в обхід санкцій Євросоюзу. Порушення виявили після встановлення внутрішнього контролю над експортом.  

«Подальший продаж автомобілів було зупинено. Крім того, BMW Group вирішила звільнити відповідальних співробітників», — йдеться у заяві компанії.

Раніше портал Business Insider повідомляв, що філія BMW у Ганновері, попри санкції, поставила російським клієнтам понад 100 люксових автомобілів.  

У 2022 році концерн BMW, як і багато інших західних автовиробників, призупинив експорт своїх автомобілів у росію через війну в Україні. Того ж року російська влада дозволила паралельний імпорт — ввезення продукції без дозволу правовласника. До переліку товарів, які можна ввозити за такою схемою, потрапили і автомобілі BMW (а також Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen та інші).  

У червні 2023 року Євросоюз у межах чергового пакета санкцій заборонив постачання до росії нових і вживаних автомобілів із двигунами об'ємом понад 1,9 л, а також електрокарів і гібридів.
