Глава российского государства представлен в номинации «Злодей года», пишет Snob.Конкуренцию Путину в этой категории составляют британский премьер-министр Дэвид Кэмерон, певица Майли Сайрус, комик Рассел Брэнд, певец Гарри Стайлз и Робин Тик, прославившийся после выхода песни «Blurred Lines».

В противоположной номинации — «Герой года» — представлена российская панк-группа Pussy Riot. Освобождение двух участниц коллектива Марии Алехиной и Надежды Толоконниковой из тюрьмы при этом может стать «Музыкальным моментом года» по версии NME.

Кроме Pussy Riot в «геройской» номинации фигурирует основатель группы The Velvet Underground Лу Рид, скончавшийся в октябре 2013 года. Также среди номинантов значится Дэвид Боуи, выпустивший в прошлом году первый альбом после 10-летнего перерыва в музыкальной карьере. На эту награду NME претендуют лидеры Arctic Monkeys и Haim Алекс Тернер и Эсте Хаим. Группа Тернера лидирует по числу номинаций — она представлена в девяти категориях из 19-ти.

В номинации «Альбом года» представлены Arctic Monkeys с пластинкой «AM», Канье Уэст (за альбом «Yeezus»), Queens Of The Stone Age («...Like Clockwork») и Savages («Silence Yourself»).
