Сюжет ролика занований на реальній історії, яка трапилася із колишнім бійцем батальйону "Артемівськ" та учасником оборони Дебальцевого Віталієм Овчаренком у квітні 2015 року. 

Нагадаємо, що ініціатива "Переходь на українську", яка стартувала 9 листопада 2015 року роликом "Українська мова - наша безпека", збирає та публікує історії переходу на українську, була ініціатором та основним організатором ації до 25-річчя Незалежності "Мовомарафон-25. Переходь на українську - стань незалежним", а також займається створенням відео-роликів з метою популяризації української. Ролик "Свої" є четвертою відео-роботою ініціативи.
