Бывший губернатор штата Род-Айленд Линкольн Чафи (Lincoln Chafee) официально заявил о намерении выдвинуть свою кандидатуру от демократов на выборах президента США в 2016 году. Об этом сообщает Reuters.

Выступая в университете Джорджа Мейсона в штате Вирджиния в пригороде Вашингтона, Чафи призвал «выпутаться из дорогих войн». В качестве своих приоритетов он назвал образование, развитие инфраструктуры, здравоохранение, охрану окружающей среды и сильный средний класс.

Чафи ранее был сенатором, состоял в Республиканской партии, в 2002 году он был единственным республиканцем, голосовавшим против применения силы в Ираке. Некоторое время он был независимым политиком, в 2013 году присоединился к демократам.

62-летний Чафи стал четвертым претендентом на выдвижение от демократов. Ранее о намерении участвовать в президентской гонке от Демократической партии заявили экс-госсекретарь Хиллари Клинтон, бывший губернатор Мэриленда Мартин О'Мэлли и сенатор Берни Сандерс от Вермонта.

От республиканцев в президентскую гонку вступили девять претендентов.
