Экс-губернатор штата Вирджиния Джим Гилмор, представляющий Республиканскую партию, принял решение выйти из дальнейшей борьбы за пост президента США.

Об этом он сообщил в пятницу, передает "ТАСС".

В своем заявлении политик отметил, что несмотря на приостановку кампании, он продолжит отстаивать свои идеалы и предпринимать усилия с целью добиться, чтобы следующим президентом США стал республиканец, а не "тот, кто обещает продолжать катастрофическую политику Обамы".

В 2008 году Гилмор уже заявлял о своих президентских амбициях, но на этапе внутрипартийной борьбы за право баллотироваться на пост хозяина Белого дома проиграл сенатору Джону Маккейну. Должность губернатора Вирджинии политик, который в свое время служил в контрразведке сухопутных войск США, занимал с 1998 по 2002 годы.

После приостановки кампании Гилмора на пост президента США теперь претендуют шесть республиканцев: миллиардер Дональд Трамп, сенатор от Техаса Тед Круз, сенатор от Флориды Марко Рубио, экс-губернатор Флориды Джеб Буш, губернатор Огайо Джон Кейсик, темнокожий нейрохирург Бен Карсон.
