Генерал Майкл Флинн, лишившийся должности советника Дональда Трампа, получил за участие 10 декабря 2015-го года в праздничном ужине по случаю годовщины кремлёвского телеканала Russia Today, где сидел за одним столом с Владимиром Путиным, порядка 40 тысяч долларов. Такую информацию опубликовали журналисты издания The New Yorker со ссылкой на собственные источники.

По данным издания, Флинн не бесплатно посещал торжественное мероприятие канала Russia Today, который в народе считается «пропагандистским рупором Кремля», и который недавно в НАТО причисляли к одним из самых главных источников пропаганды России в мире (телеканал вещает на многих языках мира). Источники располагают информацией, что Флинну за ужин, где с ним за одним столом сидел Путин, заплатили около 40 тысяч долларов: на этом мероприятии Флинн якобы не обсуждал государственные вопросы, однако СМИ сообщали о том, что он обсуждал с официальными лицами в РФ снятие антироссийских санкций.

Сам Флинн в связи с разразившимся скандалом подал в отставку 13 февраля 2017-го года, письменно извинившись перед Дональдом Трампом и американским вице-президентом Майком Пенсом. Сообщалось, что Флинна отговаривали от присутствия на этом ужине во избежание проблем, однако он уверял своих советчиков, что «знает, что делает».
