Специалисты социальной сети Facebook проверили теорию «шести рукопожатий» на примере своих пользователей. Так, выяснилось, что двух людей разделяют не шесть «рукопожатий», а почти в два раза меньше — это значение составляет 3,57. Исследование опубликовано в Facebook.

Теория шести рукопожатий гласит, что все люди на Земле знакомы друг с другом максимум через пять человек. В ходе исследования выяснилось, что существует тенденция к сокращению расстояния между двумя людьми с ростом количества пользователей.

Для решения вопроса применялись два алгоритма. Первый основывается на приблизительной оценке количества уникальных единиц в выборке (в данном случае, одна выборка – сколько у пользователя друзей друзей, другая – друзей друзей друзей и так далее). Другой алгоритм определяет расстояние между двумя людьми.

Автор Gizmodo и Wired Брайан Лафкин отмечает, что выводы Facebook нельзя называть опровержением теории шести рукопожатий., поскольку в выборку включены только 1,6 миллиардов из семи проживающих на Земле людей. Кроме того, их объединяет сам Facebook, соответственно у них заранее есть общие характеристики.
