При цьому похибка точності нанесених на карту даних становить до п’яти метрів, повідомляє CNBC. Соцмережа створила цю карту в рамках ініціативи по доставці інтернету з космосу. Компанія намагається оцінити точний розподіл людей по всій планеті, типи інтернет-послуг, якими вони користуються, якість підключення до мережі. Так Facebook зможе оцінити кількість населення, в якого інтернету немає або він дуже повільний.

«Ми хочемо поставляти інтернет зі стратосфери і з космосу, доповнюючи наземні мережі високопродуктивними супутниками і безпілотними літаками», - розповіла голова стратегічного інноваційного партнерства і джерел інформації Facebook Жанна Льюїс (Janna Lewis). Для створення карти Facebook розробила власну технологію. Як зазначає CNBC, соцмережа планує побудувати мультимережу по всій планеті й активно наймає інженерів аерокосмічної промисловості.

Раніше Facebook спільно з шістьма провідними технологічними компаніями  розробила проект internet.org, щоб підключити до мережі більш, ніж 4,5 мільярди людей, переважно в Азії, Африці та Латинській Америці. Facebook за перший рік роботи проекту надала доступ до інтернету понад 9 мільйонам людей.
