Найгіршим за останнє десятиліття за рівнем свободи у світі назвала 2015 рік неурядова організація Freedom House. За даними правозахисників, рівень несвободи зростає у 72 країнах, кращою стала ситуація в 43 країнах.

Як стверджують автори звіту, «страх перед соціальними заворушеннями» спонукає владу в Росії, Китаї та «інші авторитарні режими розправлятися з інакомисленням», повідомляє Радіо Свобода.

Freedom House також відзначає, що Кримський півострів України, у силовий спосіб анексованийРосією в 2014 році, переживає «драматичні невдачі» в питанні дотримання демократичних норм.

Директор із досліджень Freedom House Дженніфер Данем вказує, що російська «влада» в Криму далі придушує інакомислення, у тому числі шляхом відключення незалежних засобів інформації та обмеження можливостей представників громадянського суспільства, особливо тих, хто представляє кримськотатарську громаду. Вона додала, що багато противників російської окупації Криму були заарештовані або вигнані.

Як наголосила Дженніфер Данем, Україна «зберегла демократичні завоювання», досягнуті після повалення у 2014 році президента Віктора Януковича, але подальший прогрес у 2015 році гальмував збройних конфлікт на Донбасі між українськими військами та підтримуваними Росією сепаратистами, суперечки з приводу децентралізації і протистояння серед провідних політичних діячів та олігархів країни.
