У неділю, 29 січня, правління Соціал-демократичної партії Німеччини (СДПН) вирішило висунути колишнього голову Європейського парламенту Мартіна Шульца кандидатом в федеральні канцлери під час парламентських виборів, які відбудуться восени 2017 року, повідомляє агентство dpa, передає DW.
На підтримку 61-річного Шульца проголосували всі учасники засідання правління. Крім того, Шульц висунутий на посаду голови СДПН замість Зіґмара Ґабріеля, який кілька днів тому очолив МЗС Німеччини. Офіційно його обрання як кандидата у канцлери, так і глави партії має відбутися на надзвичайному з'їзді СДПН у середині березня.
61-річний Шульц протягом 11 років був мером містечка Вюрзелен під Ахеном на заході Німеччини. З 1994 року він є депутатом Європарламенту, а в 2012 році став його головою. 17 січня 2017 року наступником Шульца на посаді голови парламенту ЄС був обраний італієць Антоніо Таяні.
