Индийская активистка правозащитного движения Иром Шармила завершила голодовку, длившуюся почти 16 лет. Решение о прекращении голодовки, пояснила Шармила, она приняла ради участия в парламентских выборах в родном штате Манипур, пишeт Украинские новости

Акция протеста была прекращена после того, как суд разрешил Иром Шармиле, находившейся под стражей по обвинению в попытке самоубийства, что считается в Индии уголовным преступлением, выйти на свободу под залог. Суд также потребовал от активистки предоставить письменное обязательство о прекращении голодовки.

Иром Шармила объявила голодовку в ноябре 2000 года в знак протеста против закона, предоставившего особые полномочия силовым структурам в штате Манипур.

Вскоре после начала голодовки Шармиле были предъявлены обвинения в попытке самоубийства, она была взята под стражу и помещена в больницу, где ее насильственно кормили через трубку в носу.

Для того, чтобы снова начать питаться самостоятельно, отмечает AFP, активистке потребуется помощь врачей.
