Палата представителей канадского парламента проголосовала за изменение стихов в английской версии национального гимна с тем, чтобы он стал гендерно нейтральным. Об этом в четверг, 16 июня, сообщает «Русская служба Би-би-си».

Согласно решению депутатов, слова «True patriot love in all thy sons command» (настоящая любовь патриота— в сердцах всех твоих сыновей) будут заменены на «...in all of us command» (...во всех наших сердцах).

Инициатива внесения изменения принадлежит члену правящей Либеральной партии Морилю Беланже, который неизлечимо болен боковым амиотрофическим склерозом (неизлечимое дегенеративное заболевание центральной нервной системы) и может не дожить до того дня, когда новая редакция гимна будет окончательно утверждена. Новые слова должен одобрить сенат.

Гимн называется «O Canada». В стране существует две его версии — на английском и французском — официальных языках государства, причем один не является переводом второго. Текст песни был написан в 1908 году. Официально «O Canada» стал гимном страны 1 июля 1980 года
