Американский сенатор Джон Маккейн, защищая СМИ от недавнего обвинения во враждебности со стороны Дональда Трампа, предупредил, что подавление свободной прессы подобно тому "как начинали диктаторы", сообщает Reuters.

Международный порядок, установленный после Второй мировой войны, был построен частично на свободной прессе, отметил Маккейн в отрывке программы Встреча с прессой в эфире телеканала NBC News, который вышел накануне полного выпуска в воскресенье, 19 февраля.

"Я ненавижу прессу. Я ненавижу тебя, особенно, – сказал Маккейн интервьюеру Чаку Тодду. – Но дело в том, что вы (журналисты – ред.) нужны нам. Нам нужна свободная пресса. Мы должны иметь ее. Это жизненно важно".

"Если вы хотите сохранить - я очень серьезно сейчас - если вы хотите сохранить демократию, как мы знаем, вы должны иметь свободу и много противопоставлять печатью. И без этого, я боюсь, мы можем потерять время так много наших индивидуальных свобод. Вот как диктаторы начинали", – продолжил он.

"Они (диктаторы – ред.) начинали с подавления свободной прессы. Другими словами, укрепление власти. Когда вы посмотрите на историю, то первое, что диктаторы делают, это закрывают прессу. И я не говорю, что президент Трамп пытается быть диктатором. Я просто говорю, что мы должны извлечь уроки из истории", – сказал Маккейн.
