Режисер українського документального фільму «20 днів у Маріуполі» Мстислав Чернов до останнього моменту не був упевнений у тому, що саме скаже у промові після здобуття премії «Оскар». 

Про це він розповів в інтерв'ю, «Голосу Америки».

Чернов наголосив, що під час його короткого виступу в залі була тиша. На думку режисера, це свідчить, що його почули.

«Я відчув, що в залі така тиша, що я міг почути удар шпильки об підлогу. Це була найбільша тиша, яку я чув у цій залі за всю церемонію. Тому я відчуваю, що так, мене почули. І кілька людей сказали мені після церемонії, що вони плакали. І я був такий щасливий знати, що мої слова дійшли до їхніх сердець», — сказав Чернов.

Він зізнався, що багато людей з усієї країни пропонували йому свої ідеї щодо того, що він скаже у своїй промові в разі перемоги. «Насправді було досить складно вирішити, що говорити. Є так багато речей, і ви повинні вкласти їх у ці 45 секунд, які ви маєте на сцені. До останнього моменту я не був упевнений, що я збираюся сказати. І всі, із ким я спілкувався — режисери, актори, — вони висловлювали підтримку Україні. Вони висловлювали занепокоєння тим, що зараз відбувається. І ця підтримка України провалюється. Це те, що в голові людей», — сказав режисер.
