Парламент Барбадоса избрал первого в истории страны президента, который возглавит государство после того, как оно откажется от формальной власти королевы Великобритании Елизаветы II.

Главой государства станет генерал-губернатор Сандра Мэйсон, передаёт газета The Barbados Advocate. 72-летняя политик представляет на острове британского монарха с 2018 года, но одновременно известна как один из самых высокопоставленных сторонников независимости.

Она будет приведена к присяге 30 ноября, в день 55-летия независимости от Великобритании. В этот же день Елизавета II перестанет быть главой островного государства.

Власти Барбадоса объявили об отказе от монархии в сентябре 2020 года. "Пришло время полностью оставить наше колониальное прошлое, – заявила тогда Мэйсон. – Барбадосцы хотят, чтобы главой государства был барбадосец". Букингемский дворец тогда заявил, что вопрос выбора главы государства – это внутреннее дело правительства и народа острова.

95-летняя Елизавета II – королева 16 государств, в том числе Великобритании, Канады, Австралии, Новой Зеландии, Ямайки, Папуа-Новой Гвинеи и ещё девяти островных государств. В 1999 году референдум об отказе от монархии прошёл в Австралии, тогда против республиканской формы правления проголосовали почти 55 процентов населения.
