Палестинський президент Махмуд Аббас був агентом КДБ у 1980-х роках. Про це повідомляє ТСН  із посиланням на "Sky News".

У доповіді, яка була миттєво спростована Палестинською владою, в якості доказу цитуються радянські документи, що зберігаються у Кембріджському університеті. Документи вивіз з Росії колишній архіваріус КДБ Василь Мітрохін, який втік до Великобританії, після розпаду СРСР в 1991 році. Мітрохін помер в 2004 році у віці 81 року, але файли стали доступні для загального дослідження тільки в 2014 році. Двоє ізраїльських вчених виявили, що кодовим ім'ям Аббаса був  "Кротов" або "Крот", він працював під керівництвом Михайла Богданова в Сирії.

 Богданов працював у радянському посольстві в Дамаску в той час і наразі є послом Росії на Близькому Сході. Академіки з Єврейського університету в Єрусалимі повідомляють, що вони передали інформацію телеканалу, тому що президент Росії Володимир Путін зараз намагається організувати зустріч між Аббасом та ізраїльським прем'єр-міністром Біньяміном Нетаньяху. Вони стверджують, що Росія все ще може впливати на Аббаса в той час, коли Кремль все більше самостверджується на Близькому Сході. Окрім цього, відомо, що Аббас деякий час навчався у Москві, де він отримав докторський ступінь в області історії.

Наразі Аббас стає все менш популярним у себе вдома і намагається заручитися підтримкою за кордоном. Вплив Росії на Близькому Сході зростає з моменту втручання в сирійський конфлікт в минулому році. Зараз РФ намагається організувати ізраїльсько-палестинський саміт у спробі запустити мирні переговори.
