Преподаватель Гарвардского университета, профессор права Лоуренс Лессиг (Lawrence Lessig) принял решение прекратить участие в президентской избирательной кампании в США. Об этом сообщает издание The Washington Post, пишет Лента.ру.

Основная причина — ужесточение требований для участия в дебатах представителями Демократической партии. Теперь выступить на них смогут кандидаты, набравшие не менее 1 процента голосов по результатам опросов общественного мнения. Отмечается, что Лессиг такой поддержки не получил.

По его словам, партия не позволяет ему стать кандидатом. «Я не могу просить людей оказывать поддержку в ведении кампании, которая, как я понимаю, не позволит опередить других членов Демократической партии», — отметил Лессиг.

2 сентября Лессиг заявил о намерении баллотироваться на пост президента США от Демократической партии. Сообщалось, что ему удалось собрать через интернет 1 миллион долларов в фонд своей избирательной кампании. Лессиг отмечал, что в случае избрания его на пост главы государства он проведет реформу финансирования избирательных кампаний, после чего уйдет в отставку и передаст полномочия вице-президенту.

Президентские выборы в США состоятся 8 ноября 2016 года. Бывший госсекретарь США Хиллари Клинтон (Демократическая партия) — один из самых популярных претендентов на высший пост.
