Як пише Media Sapiens із посиланням на  The Guardian, редактори оголосили про своє рішення після того, як таблоїди були викуплені видавництвом Trinity Mirror. Сума угоди склала £200 мільйонів. До Trinity Mirror вже входять The Daily Mirror, The Sunday Mirror та The Sunday People.

Давн Неесон пропрацювала в газеті The Daily Star 11 років. Х'ю Уїттов був редактором The Daily Express 15 років. В листі до працівників газети Давн Неесон написала, що робота в The Daily Star була для неї неймовірним досвідом, але «настав час перейти до нових викликів».

Саймон Фокс (Simon Fox), виконавчий директор Trinity Mirror, заявив, що усі п'ять національних газет, які належать видавництву, будуть залишатися редакційно незалежними.

Раніше цього року британська газета The Guardian змінила дизайн й перейшла до формату таблоїда. Таким чином The Guardian прагне забезпечити притік коштів й стабільне майбутнє для друкованого продукту.
