Представники інтернет-проекту Tor мають намір збільшити частку недержавних джерел фінансування і зменшити вплив основного інвестора – держави.

У 2013 році, Тор отримав більше $ 1,8 млн від уряду США, близько 75 відсотків $ 2,4 млн в загальному обсязі щорічних витрат, відповідно до їх загальнодоступних податкових декларацій, пише The Daily Dot.

У відповідь на збільшення державних і внутрішнього діалогу, організація буде робити стійкий поштовх до збільшення коштів з усіх інших джерел, з тим, щоб зменшити свою залежність від уряду США.

Розробники недавно обговорювали поштовх для диверсифікації фінансування на зустрічі Tor в Іспанії, в тому числі, 50 відсотків фінансування, не урядом США в 2016 році.

Розробники Tor на зустрічі також підняв можливість лобіювання уряду зарубіжних країн у, наприклад, Європейський Союз.

Однак збільшення недержавного фінансування є головним пріоритетом.

Проте відомо, що торік мережа отримала більше персональних пожертв і надалі планує більш активно користуватися краудфандингом.

Кожен новий користувач Tor бачитиме повідомлення з проханням пожертвувати грошей. У травні розпочнеться перша краудфандингова кампанія. Кошти, зібрані з її допомогою, будуть використані на підтримку Hidden Services – сайтів, що працюють у мережі Tor. Останнім часом їхня кількість сильно зростає.

У 2014 році анонімний браузер Tor скачали близько 120 мільйонів користувачів.

Tor (скор. від англ. The Onion Router) — це система, створена для забезпечення анонімності в мережі Інтернет. Клієнтське програмне забезпечення Tor маршрутизує Інтернет-трафік через всесвітню мережу добровільно встановлених серверів з метою приховування розташування користувача. Окрім того, використання Tor робить складнішим відслідковування Інтернет-активності як на рівні веб-сайту, так і на рівні Інтернет-провайдера, включаючи «відвідування веб-сайтів, залишені повідомлення та коментарі на відповідних ресурсах, миттєві повідомлення та інші форми зв'язку», до користувача і призначений для захисту приватності користувача та можливості проведення конфіденційних операцій, приховуючи користувацьку активність в мережі від стороннього моніторингу.
