У березні законодавці, цієї переважно католицької країни, схвалили законодавство, переглянувши шлюб і назвавши його «союзом двох» замість «союз чоловіка і жінки».

Проте противники зібрали достатньо підписів, щоб провести референдум з цього питання. 

Останнє опитування, проведене 18 грудня, показало, що проти одностатевих шлюбів виступають 55,5 відсотка громадян, з прогнозованою явкою 46 відсотків.

Щоб рішення референдуму вступило в силу, щонайменше 20 відсотків виборців мають підтримати сторону-переможця. 

Раніше словенські виборці відкинули одностатеві шлюби під час референдуму в 2012 році.
