Федеральна комісія зв’язку США (The Federal Communications Commission, FCC) прийняла нові правила щодо інтернет-нейтральності. Згідно з ними доступ до інтернету прирівнюється до надання комунальних послуг.

Нові правила стосуються як широкосмугового зв’язку, так і безпровідних мереж.

Лобісти за інтернет нейтральність підтримують ідею про те, що провайдери інтернету мають обслуговувати інтернет-трафік однаково для усіх сайтів. Вони виступають проти того, аби оператор міг блокувати або послаблювати доступ до одних ресурсів та покращувати – до інших.

Як запевняли ініціатори, зміни у статусі провайдерів матимуть негайний вплив на бізнес та індивідів у США.

Активісти домагалися того, щоб широкосмугових провайдерів розцінювали як надавачів комунальних послуг. Таким чином регулятор отримав би більше повноважень для управління, а також запровадження правил інтернет-нейтральності.

Прийняття змін підтримували інтернет-підприємці з Силіконової долини. Після того, як стали відомі результати голосування у FCC, співзасновник Apple Стів Возняк (Steve Wozniak) заявив The Guardian: «Ми перемогли за інтернет-нейтральність».

Бізнесмен переконаний, що FCC потребує більше повноважень також задля того, аби запобігати майбутнім атакам у відкритому інтернеті.

Громадські активісти провели вдалу адвокаційну кампанію, надали FCC мільйони зауважень стосовно того, що цю сферу треба реформувати, додає vox.com. Вони також отримали важливого союзника в особі президента США Барака Обами.
