У віце-прем'єр-міністра Австралії Барнабі Джойса виявили громадянство Нової Зеландії

Це спричинило скандал в австралійській політиці, через який чиновник може втратити посаду та місце в парламенті. Крім того, скандал може призвести до урядової кризи, адже ліберально-консервативна коаліція на чолі з прем'єр-міністром Малкольмом Тернбуллом може втрати більшість у парламенті, де має перевагу лише в один голос.

Згідно з австралійським законодавством, депутати парламенту не мають права на подвійне громадянство. Донедавна маловідома норма закону, останніми тижнями призвела до відставки кількох парламентарів.

Віце-прем'єр Джойс уже підтвердив, що має громадянство Нової Зеландії, проте заявив, що не піде у відставку, тому зараз його справу розглядатиме Верховний суд Австралії.

Під час виступу в Джойс парламенті заявив, що ніколи не вважав себе громадянином іншої країни. Батько Джойса народився у Новій Зеландії і переїхав до Австралії у 1947 році. В МЗС Нової Зеландії пояснили, що віце-прем'єр Джойс автоматично набув новозеландського громадянства через походження свого батька.

За даними минулорічного перепису населення Австралії, майже половина 24-мільйонної країни народилася за кордоном або має принаймні одного з батьків, хто народився за кордоном.
