Известное американское издание New York Times обратило внимание на награждение украинского режиссера Олега Сенцова престижной наградой за защиту прав человека, отметив, что для Российской Федерации данное событие означает только унижение, передает PRпортал. «Вручение премии Сахарова за свободу мысли – это унижение для правительства России. Но оно также усиливает популярность узника Олега Сенцова – повышая его цену в возможном обмене», - говорится в статье. Кроме того, в американском издании напомнили, как Олег Сенцов оказался заложником у власти Кремля. 

Они отметили, что украинского режиссера задержали в Крыму в 2014 году, вскоре после того, как российские войска незаконно захватили полуостров. Его обвинили в намерении взорвать мосты, линии электропередач и памятник Владимиру Ленину. В New York Times также рассказал о самой премии, отметив, что европейская награда названа в честь советского физика и диссидента Андрея Сахарова. Ее вручают каждый год «людям или организациям, которые борются за права человека и основополагающие свободы». Таким образом, Сенцов присоединился к мировым иконам, таким как Нельсон Мандела и Малала Юсафзай.
