Влада Єгипту у середу, 24 травня, заборонила 21 інформаційний інтернет-ресурс, звинувативши їх у підтримці тероризму та у поширенні "фейкових" новин. Серед ресурсів, які потрапили під заборону, є сайт базованого у Катарі телеканалу Al Jazeera, а також відомий єгипетський незалежний новинний ресурс Mada Masr, пише DW.COM

Як зазначає агентство Reuters, ця заборона сайтів вирізняється своїми масштабами, а також тим, що вперше рішення про блокування сайтів було офіційно ухвалене на державному рівні. Раніше ті чи інші веб-ресурси у Єгипті блокувались та були недоступними для користувачів, проте влада країни офіційно не визнавала їхнє блокування адміністративними методами.

Reuters з посиланням на джерела в органах безпеки Єгипту повідомляє, що причиною блокування сайтів стало те, що вони пов'язані із забороненим у Єгипті рухом "Брати-мусульмани", який підтримується Катаром.

У середу аналогічні заходи стосовно вебсайтів були застосовані владою Саудівської Аравії та Об'єднаними Арабськими Еміратами. Зокрема, ними була заблокована робота сайту каналу Al Jazeera. Причиною заборони стали коментарі еміра Катару з критикою зовнішньої політики Сполучених Штатів Америки, які, як стверджує влада Катару, були "фейковими" та були поширені хакерами. Попри це, ці заяви були процитовані державними медіа Саудівської Аравії та ОАЕ.
