По меньшей мере 844 человека пострадали во время беспорядков в Каталонии в день проведения референдума о независимости от Испании.

Премьер-министр Испании Мариано Рахой после завершения голосования заявил, что референдум провалился и что большинство жителей его проигнорировали.

В референдуме приняли участие около 3 млн человек. Это чуть меньше половины жителей региона.

Ранее сообщалось, что полиция применила в отношении активистов резиновые пули, дубинки и слезоточивый газ, а также принудительно закрыла около 90 избирательных участков и изъяла урны для голосования.

В начале сентября Верховный суд Испании признал проведение референдума незаконным.

Каталония лишилась широкой автономии в период диктатуры Франсиско Франко с 1939 по 1975 год. В 1978 году регион снова получил ее, а в 2006 году власти Каталонии приняли документ, признающий регион отдельной нацией. В 2010 году Конституционный суд счел этот документ незаконным. По итогам опроса, проведенного властями Каталонии в 2014 году, 80% каталонцев выступили за независимость от Испании.
