Міжнародна некомерційна організація Wikimedia оголосила про перехід всіх своїх ресурсів (включно з Вікіпедією) на захищений протокол HTTPS.

Опція доступу до ресурсів Wikimedia з допомогою HTTPS була доступна і раніше. Однак тепер це налаштування стане дефолтним. Підготовка до переходу всіх ресурсів на новий протокол зайняла деякий час і вимагає змін не тільки в коді, але і в апаратному забезпеченні, тобто «залізі» серверів.

Першими на захищений протокол будуть переведені версії «Вікіпедії» російською, англійською, китайською, італійською, каталонською та івритом. Вже після з'являться також і версії вільної енциклопедії з HTTPS-доступом на інших мовах.

Одночасно з остаточним переходом на протокол HTTPS на всіх ресурсах організації запрацює HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security). Це інструмент, який допомагає запобігати атакам, що мають на меті отримати дані про користувача трафіку. 

Така увага до захисту інформації — це відповідь на підвищений інтерес з боку урядів деяких країн, а також на існуючу загрозу спостереження і цензури, кажуть представники Wikimedia.
