По данным издания, Степана Черновецкого задержали в районе Коста Брава в его доме, который, по данным полиции, был куплен за деньги, полученные незаконным путем. При этом полиция считает Степана Черновецкого "мозгом" преступной группировки. Накануне испанская полиция провела операцию, задержав в Барселоне 11 человек, которых подозревают в отмывании денег. Среди задержанных – в основном граждане Украины и России, которые обосновались в Барселоне.
По данным издания El Mundo, преступная группировка переводила полученные незаконным путем средства с Кипра и Виргинских островов на легальные испанские компании. В дальнейшем их использовали для покупки недвижимости в Испании. Известно по меньшей мере о 10 млн евро "грязных" денег.
