Валлієць 85-річний Том Боун із острова Англсі щодня вимірює кількість опадів біля свого дому. Почав це робити, коли йому виповнилося 10. Каже, це сімейна традиція, яка тягнеться із 1890-го. Для чого це вигадав його прадідусь, невідомо.  Про нього розповідає ВВС. 

Цю традицію передав Тому його дідусь, а саму традицію започаткував ще прадідусь у 1890-му. На фермі кажуть – це зручно, можна зрозуміти, скільки опадів випало і яку роботу можна виконувати. Однак для чого сам прадід вигадав вимірювати кількість опадів щодня, ніхто не знає. 

“Метеостанція” Тома складається лише із металевої труби, закопаної у землю біля сімейної ферми – так він і вимірює кількість дощу.

Том каже, що навряд пропустив хоча б день за 75 років. Якщо він хворіє чи їду не надовго на відпочинок, то опади вимірює його син чи хтось інший із родини.

Тепер послугами чоловіка користується Валлійський відділ із контролю за природними ресурсами. Інформацію Том збирає щодня точно о 9 ранку за Гринвічем. Потім раз на місяць передає урядовцям та метеорологам. Даними користуються навіть науковці, які вивчають зміну клімату. Кажуть – робота чоловіка неоціненна. 

75 років Том за це нічого не отримував, тепер місцеві метеорологи вручили йому нагороду за роботу. 25 років тому Том отримав також Орден Британської імперії. Каже, був шокований, коли отримав листа із королівського палацу. 

Взагалі, чоловік переконаний, що таких людей по усій Британії, які збирають дощову воду у труби щодня, має бути сотні. Але валлійські чиновники кажуть – такого, як Том не знають більше жодного в усій країні.
