Як відомо, в США на виборах презеидента діє дворівнева система голосування. Вибори президента проводяться окремо в кожному з 50 штатів, після чого зводяться загальнодержавні результати: кожен штат делегує 100% голосів "виборщиків" кандидатові-переможцю.

Найвагомішими є результати виборів у тих штатах, де підтримка республіканців та демократів є близькою - так звані swing states. Йдеться, зокрема, про Північну Кароліну, Арізону, Огайо та Айову. У більшості з них переміг Трамп.
