У обеих кандидаток есть шанс стать первой женщиной-президентом Тайваня на выборах, которые пройдут в январе 2016 года. Однако наблюдатели отмечают, что у лидера ДПП, 58-летней Инвэнь, шансов на победу больше, . Политический расклад сил и настроения в обществе во многом предопределили итоги состоявшихся в конце ноября прошлого года выборов в органы власти на местах. Убедительную победу на них одержала ДПП. Она правила в период с 2000 по 2008 годы, но потом растеряла популярность на волне коррупционных скандалов, пишет Delo.

Цай Инвэнь участвовала в президентской гонке 2012 года, но тогда проиграла. Сегодня же, по опросам, она лидирует, пишет BBC. Как отмечают обозреватели, одним из основных вопросов предвыборной кампании станут отношения с Пекином.

Напомним, Тайвань управляется собственной администрацией с 1949 года, когда туда бежали остатки сил "Гоминьдана", потерпевшего поражение в гражданской войне с китайскими коммунистами. КНР по-прежнему считает остров своей провинцией и добивается воссоединения. Потепление связей произошло после прихода к власти в 2008 году администрации Ма Инцзю. Он инициировал программу экономического сближения с материком при сохранении политического статус-кво.
