Парламентські вибори у Канаді відбудуться 19 жовтня. Про це повідомив премʼєр-міністр Стівен Гарпер. У неділю він розпустив парламент і, таким чином, дав старт 11-тижневій виборчій кампанії,повідомляє Радіо Свобода.
Цього разу канадські виборці обиратимуть 338 депутатів до Палати громад, що на 30 членів парламенту більше, ніж минулого разу. Це пояснюється переглядом виборчих округів у країні.
Оглядачі називають майбутні вибори викликом для Гарпера, чия Консервативна партія перебуває при владі в країні з 2006 року. Вибори триватимуть на тлі проблем у канадській економіці, спричинених зокрема падінням цін на нафту (що є основним продуктом канадського експорту).
Уряд Гарпера – один із ключових прихильників санкцій Заходу проти Росії за анексію нею Криму і причетність до збройного конфлікту на сході України. У листопаді 2014 року на саміті «Групи двадцяти» в австралійському Брісбені Стівен Гарпер порадив президенту Росії Володимиру Путіну «забратися з України».
