Парламент Бирмы избрал президентом страны 70-летнего Тхина Чжо, которого считают близким соратником лидера оппозиции и лауреата Нобелевской премии мира Аун Сан Су Чжи.

Тхин Чжо стал первым за последние полвека президентом без военного прошлого. Ожидается, что фактически через него управлять страной будет Аун Сан Су Чжи, которой этот пост запрещает занять конституция.

Ограничения вызваны тем, что муж Аун Сан Су Чжи - британец, а взрослые дети имеют гражданство других государств. В то же время сама оппозиционерка прямо заявила, что намерена влиять на политику страны сильнее, чем формальный президент.

Тхин Чжо руководит благотворительным фондом, который создала Аун Сан Су Чжи, и считается одним из ее главных сподвижников с 1990-х годов. До этого он работал в министерстве промышленности.

Оппозиционная партия "Национальная лига за демократию", которую возглавляет Аун Сан Су Чжи, в ноябре победила на парламентских выборах. Армия Бирмы и действующий лидер генерал Тейн Сейн пообещали обеспечить мирную передачу власти.

При этом, согласно переходной конституции, четверть мест в парламенте отведены представителям вооруженных сил. Таким образом, они сохранят влияние на политические решения.
