Хотя ранее премьер допускал возможность выдвижения своей кандидатуры, в разговоре с Олландом он заверил, что не допустит подобного институционального кризиса и политической конфронтации в то время, когда «Франция противостоит террористической угрозе».

27 ноября во втором туре праймериз французских правых и центристов победил занимавший пост премьер-министра Франции в 2007-2012 годах Франсуа Фийон.
