По сообщениям избирательного штаба Хиллари Клинтон, забавную картинку продвигала команда Трампа, и возможно, благодаря "войне мемов" они одержали победу в гонке за президентское кресло.

Впрочем, безобидное изображение, созданное в 2005 году Мэттом Фьюри, вызывает двоякую ассоциацию даже у американцев. Антидиффамационная лига Америки считает "жабу" символом ненависти, а лидер ультраправой организации и рьяный сторонник Трампа Ричард Спенсер был избит протестующим за то, что приколол Пепе на лацкан своего пиджака.

Первой о неподобающем поведении компании сообщила журналист Меаган Фредетте. "Они понятия не имеют, что делают и о чем говорят, — возмутилась Фредетте в твиттере. — Учитывая их политику дискриминации по отношению к чернокожим покупателям (хотя сама компания отрицает подобные инциденты), их сарказм абсолютно неуместен. Создается впечатление, что они не понимают последствия своего дизайна. Уважаемые, игра в расовую полемику далеко не лучшая тактика ведения бизнеса".
