Вибори проводяться до 150 місцевих органів влади, що охоплюють столичні та районні ради, унітарну владу та лондонські райони. Виборчі дільниці по всій Англії відкрилися о 7:00 за місцевим часом і працюватимуть до 22:00.

На місцевих виборах йде боротьба загалом за 4371 посаду. Це перші англійські вибори після загальних виборів минулого року.

Як відзначає Reuters, вибори розглядаються як вимірювач підтримки премєр-міністра Терези Мей на тлі проблем із стратегією щодо Brexit та скандалом щодо імміграційної політики і відставкою одного з її найближчих союзників.

Останні опитування в Лондоні показали, що Лейбористська партія випереджає консерваторів на 20%. Партія Мей може втратити контроль над 8 з 32 лондонськими округами.

Низький результат консерваторів навряд чи спричинить внутрішні заклики до її відставки, але може послабити її владу над партією.

Близько двох третин результатів буде оголошено вночі в п'ятницю. Решта голосів порахують протягом дня в п'ятницю, а результати очікуються завтра після обіду.

У Шотландії, Уельсі та Північній Ірландії вибори сьогодні не проводяться.
