В Ісландії планують відкрити меморіальну дошку на честь колишнього льодовика Окйекюдль, який першим втратив свій статус через глобальне потепління.

Про це повідомляє "Європейська правда" з посиланням на The Guardian.

Колишній льодовик Окйекюдль, який століття тому покривав 15 квадратних кілометрів гірського схилу на заході Ісландії і мав товщину 50 метрів, скоротився до майже 1 квадратного кілометра льоду глибиною менше 15 метрів і втратив свій статус льодовика.

Дослідники з Університету Райса в Х'юстоні, штат Техас, провідний ісландський автор Андрі Снер Магнасон і геолог Оддур Сігурдссон очолять церемонію відкриття на місці льодовика в Боргарфйордюрі 18 серпня.

"У найближчі 200 років всі наші льодовики, як очікується, повторять його долю", - йдеться на табличці ісландською та англійською мовами. "Цей пам'ятник є визнанням нашого усвідомлення того, що відбувається і що потрібно зробити. Тільки ви знаєте, чи нам це вдалося", - йдеться у посланні майбутнім поколінням.
 
 
 

Меморіал датований серпнем 2019 року і також містить позначку "415ppm CO2" - тут йдеться про рекордний рівень у 415 частин вуглекислого газу на мільйон молекул, зафіксований в атмосфері у травні цього року.
