Роб Макейр перебуває в центрі напруженої уваго між Лондоном і Тегераном після того, як його арештувала поліція в Тегерані в суботу. Його відпустили приблизно за годину.

Посол був затриманий після відвідування пам'ятної акції за жертвами катастрофи українського пасажирського літака, який збили іранські військові. Іран наказав йому пояснити його "незаконну і недоречну" присутність на демонстраціях.

У вівторок прессекретар Верховного суду Ірану Голамхоссейн Есмаїлі заявив журналістам, що, виходячи з міжнародних норм, британський посол в Ірані є небажаним елементом.

Міністр закордонних справ Британії Домінік Рааб заявив, що уряд не отримав "ніяких офіційних повідомлень" про те, що Макейр буде висланий з Ірану.
