64-річна жінка ще у 2021 році звернулася до лікарні Канберри зі скаргами на біль у животі, пітливість і кашель. Пізніше до неприємних відчуттів додалися депресія та короткочасна втрата пам'яті.

Жінку направили на обстеження, під час МРТ у головному мозку виявили патологію, яка потребувала хірургічного втручання.

Під час операції хірурги виявили у мозку пацієнтки живого хробака завдовжки вісім сантиметрів.
Нейрохірурги регулярно мають справу з інфекціями головного мозку, але це було рідкісне відкриття.
"Такого ми, звісно, не очікували. Усі були шоковані, - згадує нейрохірург Харі Прія Банді. - Хробак радісно і досить енергійно рухався".

За словами лікарів, червоний паразит міг бути там до двох місяців.
Після дослідження паразита в лабораторних умовах з'ясувалося, що це підвид хробаків, які часто зустрічаються у пітонів. Його латинська назва - Ophidascaris robertsi.
