В западных СМИ отмечается, что Евросоюз принял единогласное решение о продлении санкций против России, но европейское единство держится только благодаря усилиям США. Некоторые европейские лидеры склонялись к ослаблению санкций в обмен на российскую помощь в Сирии. Для Украины ожесточение торговых отношений с Россией не будут иметь значительного ущерба в виду того, что товарооборот между странами и так упал из-за российской агрессии.

Его признание, что российские военные все-таки были в Украине, «подчеркивает особую ответственность», которая лежит на России за выполнение Минских соглашений. К его похвале личностных качеств кандидата на пост президента США Дональда Трампа, иностранные журналисты отнеслись, с издевкой и колкостями в адрес российского фаворита.

Как и многими ожидалось, Владимир Путин подтвердил, что с первого января Украина больше не сможет свободно экспортировать свои товары в Россию. Соглашение о зоне свободной торговли с ЕС прямо противоречит ее экономическим интересам. В Кабинете министров Украины пообещали с середины января прекратить поставки товаров и услуг в оккупированный Крым, кроме гуманитарной помощи и самых необходимых вещей.

По мнению западных журналистов, ситуация с «долгом Януковича» покажет насколько такая политика будет оправдана, чтобы не допустить злоупотреблений в объявлении дефолта.
